FAQ
Frequently asked.
Why reverse for both steps?
It's the #1 thing people miss. Drilling in reverse cuts the cone without driving the screw deeper, and the extracting end is cut to grip counter-clockwise. Reverse to drill, reverse to extract.
Where can I buy SpeedOut?
We sell our product exclusively at Lowe's — in store and at lowes.com. Each product page lists the Lowe's item number so you can find it on the shelf.
Which one do I need?
Most household and deck screws: the Screw Extractor. Small screws (sizes 1–3, 3–6 mm): the Micro. Rounded or snapped bolts ¼–½ in (6–12 mm): the Bolt Extractor.
Can I use an impact driver?
Yes for the Screw Extractor and the Micro — both packages say they're great for use with impact drivers. The Bolt Extractor package doesn't say, so use a drill for that one. Whatever you use, run it in reverse, slow, with firm pressure.
What kinds of screws does it remove?
Phillips, flat, hex, Torx, square drive and painted-over heads, plus screws with the head broken off — in wood, sheet metal and machine applications.
It isn't biting. What should I do?
Make sure both steps are in reverse. Drill the cone about 1/16 in deeper, or go up one size, then extract slowly with more pressure.
Is there anything it isn't made for?
It isn't recommended for drywall/sheetrock screws, and very long screws or bolts (over 2 in) with aggressive threads can damage the bit.
Safety
Wear eye protection, clamp or secure the work, and let the bit cool before touching it. Follow your drill's safety instructions.
Screw Extractor
Which end goes in first?
The drilling end. Run the drill in reverse and let it cut a clean divot into the damaged head, then flip the bit to the extracting end.
It spins but won't bite. What now?
Drill the cone a little deeper (about 1/16 in) and try again, or move up one size. Keep the drill in reverse, go slow and push hard.
Will it work on drywall screws?
The instructions don't recommend it for drywall/sheetrock screws.
Bolt Extractor
How deep do I drill?
Deep enough that the extractor portion can grab the bolt. Back the outer sleeve off first so you have the depth, then run it back down to the top.
The sleeve is hot.
Drilling heats the bit. Let it cool or use a glove before you turn the sleeve.
Off-centre hole — will it still work?
Try to start centred. One Lowe's reviewer found it still worked off-centre, but centred is more reliable.
Micro Screw Extractor
What size screws does it fit?
Screws 1–3, about 3–6 mm, per the package.
Same method as the full-size set?
Yes. Drilling end in reverse, flip, extracting end in reverse, slow and firm.
